In this second part of our three part series on Internet marketing basic terms, we’re going to move on to the letter B. No, we’re not going to be able to cover all 26 letters of the alphabet in this series, but you will at least get a start on your Internet marketing education.
A term you are going to see an awful lot, especially if you are thinking of getting web hosting for your site, is bandwidth. This is actually very important as the amount of bandwidth that you get with your hosting package can mean the difference between $1000 in sales a month and $100,000 in sales a month.
Every time somebody goes to your website and views a page or downloads a file, that takes a certain amount of bandwidth. If your hosting company only gives you so much bandwidth each month and you go over this number, your site can either be shut down for exceeding it or the company will charge you a fee. So it is good to be aware of this when choosing a hosting company.
Another term that you are going to hear a lot is barter. This is something that you might want to consider doing when starting your first business online, especially if you don’t have a lot of money to spend. What bartering is, is offering a service that you can provide in exchange for a service that you need done for you. For example, let’s say you need to have some graphics done for your website but can’t afford to pay for them. If you have a skill, say writing articles, you can offer to write articles for this person in exchange for the graphics that you need. This is called bartering and is very common online.
Another very common term, especially today, is blog. A blog is nothing more than a website that actually started out as kind of an online diary. Most people use blogs to post their daily routines or thoughts about certain subjects. Of course marketers have taken blogs to a whole new level and turned them into real money makers. Starting a blog is easy. Just look up the term “blog” at any search engine and you’ll find plenty of sites where you can start your own blog.
One of the most common terms online is browser. You hear people tell you this all the time. “Pull up the website in your browser.” A browser is nothing more than a tool that allows you to read HTML code. Without browsers, we wouldn’t have websites because nobody would know what to do with all that HTML. Not all browsers are alike. Some interpret websites differently than others. So if you’re thinking of making your own website, test the design in a few different browsers. The most common today are Internet Explorer and Firefox.
In our final installment of our series on Internet marketing basic terms, we’re going to tackle another letter. And just to make it interesting, it won’t be the letter C.
